Dear K2 Friends & Families,
We are aware that some members of our community are planning to participate in National School Walkout day this Wednesday, March 14. The national walkout is planned to take place from 10:00am- 10:17am in honor of the 17 victims of the shooting incident that happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on February 14, 2018.
Summit Public Schools and Summit K2 support our students and their right to have their voices heard. We will support students who wish to participate in the walkout in the following way(s):
- – Provide supervision on campus and on the sidewalk in front of our school for any students respectfully participating in the demonstration from 10:00-10:17
- – We will continue providing instruction during this time for any students not participating
- – Any parents who DO NOT wish that their child participate should notify Shilpa/Alex and your child’s mentor before Wednesday
While we respect the right of students to participate in this movement, we want to make sure that our families also recognize that it is a school day and that we have a commitment to the physical and emotional safety of all. Our expectation is that all students arrive at school on time and return to school after the walkout. If your family has alternative plans for your student, please make sure that you follow normal school procedures and have a plan for signing them out and signing them back in, if needed. Students who choose to leave campus without permission will be considered to have skipped school. If you have any questions, please reach out to Shilpa or Alex.
We understand that national tragedies like the one in Florida can take an emotional toll on our students. If you notice a sudden change in your child’s behavior or health, please contact the school to seek assistance. Students at Summit K2 meet regularly with their mentor group and those groups are talking about what happened in Florida.
Some families have asked about our approach to school safety at Summit K2. As a reminder, we have a set of emergency procedures in place and regularly review them to ensure we’re following best practices. Our school’s safety protocols include:
- – Evacuation and emergency drills conducted throughout the year (including an active shooter drill to be conducted in the next few weeks)
- – Yearly staff training on emergency procedures, including a comprehensive site safety plan
- – A campus visitor policy requiring photo I.D. and visitor pass
- – Background checks for staff and volunteers
- – Every classroom equipped with emergency supply kits and walkie talkies
We appreciate your support. Please reach out if you have any questions or would like to discuss further.

Please remind your child that they have the remainder of this week to get their grades up BEFORE the progress reports go out.

We have already held our 1st lottery for the 18-19 school year. However, we still have spaces in the 7th grade. Please encourage any families who would like to apply to do so online at:
SPRING PLP MEETINGS!
Your child’s mentor will be reaching out to set up your Spring PLP meeting for this Friday, 3/16 or for a later date in March.
Please reach out to your mentor with any questions!
BLACK PANTHER FIELD TRIP!!
We are planning to take the entire school to go see the amazing Black Panther film!
MSers will be going on Friday, March 23rd and HSers will be going on Monday, March 26th.
We are excited to educate our students on the power of representing marginalized communities in film. If you are interested in chaperoning, please reach out to your child’s mentor. We would appreciate any parent volunteers!
More details regarding the trip, and options for students who opt to stay at school will be forthcoming in the next few days.
Your child should be doing at least 1 Hour of homework every night!!! Unlike a traditional school, K2 doesn’t give out sheets of HW to do each night. All of your child’s HW is on their Platform — they should be doing any of the following:
Taking notes on Focus Areas or playlists
Completing Checks for Understanding on Focus Areas or playlists
Completing overdue projects or checkpoints
AFTER SCHOOL OFFICE HOURS & CLUB SCHEDULE:
Please reference this schedule for all after school programming.
We would love to have parent volunteers at K2! Currently, we need someone to help with front desk coverage at the MS and HS. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in helping!
